Here is a common question. I'm looking for information on 3 way rigging is it mainly a river tactic?
I have posted many three-way articles on croixsippi.com, if you are unfamiliar with this presentation read the below. To answer the question, no, it is a lake tactic too. The three way set up is extremely versatile. The lure of choice can be a plain hook or a crankbait, plus more options. When lake fishing I normally use a three way set up with w/ a spinner and crawler harness or spinner and minnow. This presentation has caught me many good sized Cass and Mille Lacs Lake walleyes.
The three way is a wicked river rig and has been the main implement on many St. Croix River walleye catches. Last spring Scott Hale and received a first place finish in the 3rd annual Beach Bar walleye tournament three way rigging. Email me @ fish@croixsippi.com with any questions, I will take the time to answer them. Keep catchin.
What is a three way swivel fishing set up?
Quickly explained a three way set up starts with a swivel with not two ends, but three ends or three rings. One end of the swivel goes to the line from the reel, the second is for the weight and the third is for the lure. Naturally between the swivel and the lure and the swivel and the weight (dropper) you have fishing line. The distance between the weight and swivel is normally 12 to 20 inches, and the distance between the lure and swivel is 4 to 8 feet. Simply cut the amount of line need for the lure and the weight and tie up the three-way rig.
Small baits? Big baits? Unless you are on a top notch crappie lake or perch factory where they want fathead minnows under a bobber or a minnow head tipped on a jiggin spoon, day in day out I prefer small baits for perch, sunnies, and even crappies. What is small not Marmooska sized small (these lures work, I just go a little bigger), but jigs sized on a #10 hook. A 13-inch crappie will readily take these jigs when tipped with a spike (a small white grub available at bait stores), as well as perch and a sunfish too. Actually I like messing around with what the fish want to take, the standard choices are fathead and crappie minnows, waxie and spike grubs. It is safe to say though they will all hit small grubs, though perch seem to like minnow heads best, crappies like whole dorsal hooked minnows, and sunfish prefer grubs. If you are one stop shopping a tiny offering of either minnow or grub will take all three species.
